He learned at an early age the importance of doctors and other health care providers in someone’s life when type 1 diabetes affected his family. Stoltz was the first person in his family to attend college and become a doctor. During this time, he also served as Chief of the Retina Service at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Medical Center.ĭr. Upon completing a two-year medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, he joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. His ophthalmology residency at the University of Pennsylvania Scheie Eye Institute was distinguished by his appointment as Chief Resident. degree in medicine and pharmacology from New York Medical College. He graduated with honors from Union College and received a combined M.D./Ph.D. Stoltz was born in New York and grew up in the city of North Babylon, New York. Mukkamala has written a chapter on Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and published over 15 scientific manuscripts in peer reviewed journals such as Retina, Ophthalmology, Survey of Ophthalmology, and Archives of Ophthalmology. Mukkamala re-established the Atlanta Ophthalmological Society to foster a collegial atmosphere amongst the Atlanta Ophthalmological communityĭr. Mukkamala said that in addition to helping individuals and their family members combat sight-threatening conditions, he enjoys interacting with his hard working and caring staff and building relationships with the other eye care providers in the community. When asked about the most rewarding aspect of his career, Dr. Mukkamala appreciates using cutting edge technology to visualize, diagnose, and treat retinal diseases. Mukkamala chose to become a physician because it allows him “to connect with people every day bringing a ray of joy and hope to their lives.” He enjoys spending time with his patients and enjoys explaining to them in detail about their eye conditions and their treatment options. He chose vitreo-retinal surgery as a specialty because it offers him the ability to perform procedures that require a high level of precision, something that makes his detail oriented personality come in handy. During his fellowship, he was involved in the training of ophthalmology residents at Columbia University, New York University, Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Institute, and Bellevue Hospital.ĭr.
